CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - When asking six year old Hazel Love what she is doing, the answer is simple. "We're building beds! We're helping kids!"

She couldn't have said it better.

Love was one of the one hundred and ten volunteers at the WBGL studio, hammering and drilling pieces of wood. Each plank, soon-to-be part of a handmade bed.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace invites volunteers to build 80 beds

WBGL station manager, Jeff Scott, said this partnership couldn't be more incredible. "We have partnered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace that believes that kids shouldn't sleep on the floor. And I think we all believe that, right? It seems like a no brainer!"

The national non-profit, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, found a corner in Mahomet. Now, their partnership was put to work to build eighty beds from scratch.

Mike Case, the Vice President of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, shared they started building beds in March of 2024.

"We're seven months in, and we've delivered 185 beds!" he said with a smile.

These beds, however, couldn't be done by screws and nails alone. "We want to get as many hands on these beds as we can," added Case.

Both adults and children spent hours, staining wood and counting planks.

"I have a little one and I want her to know the significance! That what we're doing makes a difference..." said Love's mom. The two, spending their day as volunteers to help build.

With over 110 volunteers, Scott said this is the most they have ever seen.

Case shared, their mission is the result of these hands.

"They're not building beds; You're getting kids off the floor. That's that's what we're really doing. It's making a kid's life better."
