(WAND) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Comcast NBCUniversal have established a groundbreaking partnership that extends the network's Olympic coverage rights for two additional Olympic events.
Approved by the IOC Executive Board on Wednesday, this partnership elevates the long-standing relationship between the IOC and Comcast NBCUniversal from mere media rights-holding to a strategic partnership.Â
The IOC announced that this agreement secures media rights for the Olympic Games across all platforms in the United States until 2036.
The media rights extension for the 2033-2036 Olympic cycle, which includes the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2034, and the yet-to-be-determined host of the 2036 Summer Olympics, is valued at $3 billion.
Several countries, including India, Qatar, Turkey, Hungary, and Indonesia, have expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Summer Games.
NBCUniversal's comprehensive coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympics has set new consumption records and milestones.
The company's coverage from Paris averaged 67 million total viewers per day across its broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms. Fans streamed 23.5 billion minutes of NBCUniversal's Paris 2024 coverage, with the streaming service Peacock responsible for 40 percent more viewing than all previous Olympic Summer and Winter Games combined.
Since first presenting the Olympic Games in Tokyo 1964, NBCUniversal has showcased a total of 19 Olympic Games and 13 consecutive editions—more than any other U.S. media company.
With this new announcement, by the end of the Summer Games in 2036, NBCUniversal will have presented 25 Olympic Games and 19 consecutive editions.
