DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) —  Decatur has finished its third abandonment to rehab project. Renovating an abandoned house rather than getting rid of it through demolition. But the project comes at a cost.

A formally abandoned house has been renovated and is up for sale. August 23, 2024
The latest home to be renovated is located at 867 W. Waggoner Street. The house has a new roof, front porch, and the inside has been entirely redone along with new appliances. The home is on the market for $57,900 through Main Place Real Estate. The project is part of revitalization of local neighborhoods. It is funded by taxpayers through the Federal American Rescue Plan Act.
At the price it is listed for, it’s a loss of about $55,000. The cost of the restoration is $113,000. The city also demolished a home in an adjoining lot for $11,000.
The first home completed in the rehab project has been sold and a second is under contract. Five more homes are currently under construction. Two additional homes are planned for after those.
