SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Office of Correctional Medicine at SIU School of Medicine recently joined a program from the U.S. Department of Defense to create new opportunities for transitioning service members and military spouses.

The DoD's SkillBridge Program connects those leaving the service as well as military spouses with industry partners, such as SIU's Office of Correctional Medicine, for work experience opportunities like specialized training, apprenticeships or internships during the final 180 days of military service.

“This partnership strengthens our commitment to supporting those who have served our country,” said Dawn DeFraties, executive director of correctional medicine at SIU School of Medicine. “Service members bring leadership, accountability and technical expertise, making them valuable additions to our teams.”

Participants continue to receive military compensation and benefits while gaining hands-on experience in civilian career fields. Industry partners benefit by welcoming a highly trained and motivated workforce at no cost.

According to its website, the Office of Correctional Medicine at SIU Medicine "improves health outcomes for justice-involved individuals through innovative care, education and community service."

Other SkillBridge partners include Harvard University, Vanderbilt University, Clemson University, the University of Iowa and the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.
