President Donald Trump

TAMPA, Fla. (WAND) – President Donald Trump claimed shoppers need to show a photo ID to buy groceries.

The president made the claim Tuesday evening at a rally in Tampa, Fla., as he made a point about voting laws. He was trying to tell supporters that tighter laws would stop people who aren’t U.S. citizens from voting, and in his argument added that people need IDs for most other things.

“If you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card, you need ID,” he told the crowd. “You go out and you want to buy anything, you need ID and you need your picture.”

Shoppers do need IDs to buy alcohol, some medicines and cigarettes.

The station says the rally was meant to back two Florida Republicans before primary elections. The president accused Democrats of obstructing his agenda and Brett Kavanaugh, who he chose as a Supreme Court nominee.
