DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – The American Red Cross is looking for help with the installation of smoke alarms in Decatur.
The “Sound the Alarm” program is coming to central Illinois on Saturday, May 5. Volunteers can join teams as they install alarms at homes across the city from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Each team will involve an educator, a documenter and an installer. Red Cross leaders say it’s important to make sure people understand the importance of having a working alarm in a fire emergency.
“Sound the Alarm in Decatur is part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires,” said Bryce Goff, executive director of American Red Cross Serving South Central Illinois. “By volunteering with the Red Cross, you can truly make a difference in someone’s life.”
The Red Cross says a working smoke alarm can slice the risk of death in half. They say each family should have an emergency escape plan to increase the odds of survival even more.
