Running from April 15-19, the annual spring campaign is held at the beginning of construction season to encourage safe driving through highway work zones.

Drivers are asked to use extra caution in work zones. From 2018 to 2022, there were over 1,500 people each year injured from work zone crashes in Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has provided the following work zone safety tips:

  • Drop your phone and drive
  • Slow down and obey speed limits
  • Move over for workers when possible
  • Pay attention, since conditions can change quickly
  • Give heavy vehicles room to adjust
  • Remember that traffic backups can happen at any time
