CERRO GORDO, Ill. (WAND)- A new program at Cerro Gordo High School is teaching the Elementary students about the life cycle of chickens.
The program started in February, and allowed students to learn about chickens from incubation through adulthood. Eleven chicks were hatched in each classroom at the Elementary school and then moved to the brooders and coop outside of the High School Ag Classroom.
Teacher and FFA advisor Megan Meade says that this was a unique experience for her students.
"My students got that hands on experience, it was great for some of my students that don't have an agricultural background because most of my students these days do not live on a farm or have a family directly tied to a farm."
While eleven chicks were hatched there were to many roosters in the flock. Meade is now looking to rehome four of the roosters, finding them a coop they can call their own.Â
"I know quite a few students over there tried to talk their parents into getting chickens, so I know quite a few of them took the knowledge they got back home to try and convince their parents to get chickens."Â
If you are interested in giving one of these roosters a home, you can contact the Cerro Gordo FFA chapter.
Meade says that she hopes to continue this lesson for many years to come, continuing to grow their flock and teach important lessons to the future generations.Â
