SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — August 31st marks Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell's last day in office, and the beginning of Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon's interim sheriff position.

Allmon will be splitting his time between the coroner's office and the sheriff's office while the application review committee created by County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter vets candidates.

Allmon said he is welcoming the responsibility — though unexpected — and will fulfill his duties to the best to his ability. "I do take the oath of my office as coroner very seriously, and those that have worked with me know that. But I also take the oath of that [sheriff's] office very seriously as well."

Allmon said he is committed to being physically present in the sheriff's office in order to keep a united front. "I will be there, I will be visible. And I want them to know that they have a leader and that I will be there if they need me."

Allmon said he's also looking to collaborate with the Massey Commission in order to share their thoughts and facilitate interdepartmental communication. "I think that, allowing their voices to be heard ... that's important in situations like this." said Allmon "And I will I'll do anything I can to assist them. "
