COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - The Coles County Sheriff's Office is warning people about scammers impersonating current and former deputies, even using their names.Â
The scammers try to convince people the missed federal jury duty, and they have to pay money to avoid arrest.Â
They can manipulate caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from the sheriff's office or another legitimate agency.Â
If you get a call like this, hang up immediately. Do not give out any personal information, send money, or your bank account information.Â
No law enforcement agency, including the Sheriff’s Office, Prosecutor’s Office, or any federal agency will ever:
Â
• Call, email, text, or mail you a warrant and demand payment
• Request money for:
• Missing jury duty
• Getting someone out of jail
• Clearing an arrest warrant
Â
Do not send money, gift cards, or electronic payments to anyone making these claims.
