Man accused of attacking victim with a sword during attempted robbery

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - One man was arrested after Decatur police said he attacked someone with a sword during a robbery.

According to a sworn statement, Rusty Simpson and another suspect were accused of trying to rob a man at gunpoint in late February.

The sworn statement said that after the man fought back, Simpson grabbed a nearby sword and started swinging it at him.

The victim suffered several cuts and was taken to the hospital shortly after.

Simpson was denied pre-trial release and is being held in the Macon County Jail.

He will have a preliminary hearing at 10:30 a.m. on March 18.
