WASHINGTON (WAND) — Senator Dick Durbin was unanimously re-elected as the Senate Democratic Whip for the 119th Congress Tuesday morning.
“I am honored to continue to serve the Senate Democratic Caucus as Whip in the 119th Congress," said Durbin in a statement. "The November 5th election showed that our nation remains divided, and we face many challenges ahead. I look forward to continuing to serve my caucus and the American people in this role.”
Last week, the senator spoke to reporters in Springfield and emphasized that politicians should trust Americans and aim for bipartisanship.
"If you don't have optimism about the future of this country and you don't trust the basic wisdom of the American people, even when they disagree with you, you have no business in politics," Durbin said.
Durbin has served in the number two role in the caucus since 2005, and is one of six Illinoisans who have held the position.
