HERRICK, Ill. (WAND) — A man was shot and killed during a break-in in Herrick, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
The office received a call around 5:25 a.m. on Friday regarding a home invasion in progress at an address in rural Herrick. The suspect was a Cowden man named Wade M. Barnes. The 19-year-old was known by the sheriff's office due to prior involvements, including a current criminal case.
SCSO said that during a break-in, Barnes was threatening the people inside the home. The occupants armed themselves and called for Barnes to stop. When he proceeded into the home, they fired at him.
EMS transported Barnes to a hospital in Shelbyville where he died from his injuries at 7:16 a.m.
The investigation by the sheriff's office, Illinois State Police, the Shelby County Coroner, and the Shelby County State's Attorney is ongoing.
