SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - While many of their classmates used the day off of school to complete college applications, sleep in, or catch up on homework, a group of students from Springfield High School (SHS) took the day to serve local veterans. 

They traveled with leaf bags, rakes, and gloves to more than 20 yards in Springfield, serving those who served our country. 

"They spent their years doing their job of protecting us while I have the liberty to go to school every day.," said Sri Thuppal, a senior at SHS and President of the school's National Honors Society. "I'm thankful for that liberty. So on this day, I just want we all just want to give back to them." 

Before starting lawn maintenance, the students introduced themselves to the veterans and took time to connect with them. Some of the students said it gave them the chance to learn more about US history and what high school was like for these veterans.  

One of the veterans they raked leaves for, Bobby Bolt, said he loved interacting with the students and seeing how hard they were working. 

"It's a very outstanding project for the honor society and the kids to do," said Bolt, who served with the U.S Marine Corps. "It shows a great amount of respect and that's what we need for the country. 

As students left the yards, they placed a small American flag near the sidewalk to signify to others that the resident is a veteran.
