SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Illinois State Fair is one of the most anticipated events in the state — and this year's celebration is bringing some big changes to Springfield.

This year's theme is "Miles of Smiles" — celebrating the 100th anniversary of Route 66.

Fair Director Jerry Costello said visitors will notice major improvements across the grounds this year.

"You'll notice roads have been repaired, roofs have been replaced — you'll see fresh paint, new lighting, new HVAC systems and additional fans placed throughout the grounds," Costello said.

Organizers are also making this year's fair more affordable for families.

"Every day of the fair, children 12 and under are free," said State Fair Manager Rebecca Clark. "Seniors can enjoy the fair for just $3. We continue to offer popular discount opportunities, including our $2 admission day on Tuesday, now through Aug. 12."

At its core, the Illinois State Fair exists to promote agriculture across the state. Clark said that mission will not get lost in all the fun.

The fair will also feature a variety of events and activities for all ages, giving families plenty of reasons to make the trip to Springfield this year.

Ice cream alone will help, as this year's Flavor of the Fair is Cruisin' Candy Crunch, a vanilla or chocolate milkshake topped with colorful candy-coated chocolate pieces. 

With big changes and exciting events on the way, Costello said he cannot wait for the gates to open.

"Really, really excited — one week from today to cut the ribbon for the Illinois State Fair," Costello said.

The Illinois State Fair runs from Aug. 13 to 23 in Springfield.
