ALEXANDER, Ill. (WAND) - More details are coming in regarding a fire at a salvage yard in Morgan County.

The Springfield Fire Fighters Local 37 said in an Aug. 1 Facebook post that they responded to a tire fire at Sheppard's Auto Sales and Salvage in Alexander Friday afternoon.

According to the Jacksonville Fire Department, the fire started in machinery used to process used tires into granulated material.

Firefighters used drones to help observe the fire from a safe distance and communicate with ground crews. They worked for over 8 hours to get the situation under control.

The manager told WAND News that no one was hurt and that the fire started by accident. Jacksonville FD says smoke and flames may continue to be visible in the coming days from piles of wire and tires on-site.

Fire crews will continue monitoring the conditions.
