SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) -- The Rotary South Club in Springfield is a sponsor for the Wreaths Across America campaign which aims to remember, honor and teach people about the services veterans have provided for the country.
"It's a way for us to contribute to the community and is also a fundraiser so then some of the money generated goes to local charities, so it's a win-win," Rotary South volunteer Chris Winters said.
A wreath costs $15 to buy and WAA gives back $5 for each wreath that is bought to the more than 4000 sponsorship groups nationwide. The money will go towards local programs to support veterans or military families.
"This past year all of our fundraisers were canceled with the exception of Wreaths Across America. It was the only thing keeping money flowing," Winters said.
All the wreaths collected through Rotary South will be laid at the Camp Butler Cemetery in December. The goal is to have 5,000 graves honored.
"We will lay that specific wreath on a particular grave if that is what they want," Winters said. "We will make sure it is laid on a relative or friend. If you give us the name, we will do the research and make sure the grave is located."
Winters has a family that served in the military, and being part of wreath laying for the past five years has been an honor.
"It's a great opportunity for community service and to be educated for the sacrifice our veterans have given," Winters said. "For the people who can come out and participate, it's a moving experience and the visual when there is snow on the ground is gorgeous."
The deadline to donate to Rotary South is in November. Wreaths Across America day then follows on Dec. 18.
