SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield Police Department is investigating a Sunday morning incident on the city's northeast side that left one person dead.
Springfield police tell WAND-TV News that the incident happened in the 1300 block of Clay Street at about 5:00 a.m. According to the preliminary investigation, Nelra Broomfield, 40, of Springfield was found with what appears to be a gunshot wound to the head by officers, and was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The Sangamon County Coroner's office says Broomfield sustained a gunshot wound and it is consistent with a homicide, but lab testing is still pending. The Springfield Police Department continue to investigate this incident.
