Gun with ammo

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A Republican led bill that would clarify and set requirements for what schools should do after hearing a gun violence threat passed unanimously out of the Illinois Senate.

The plan was made after state Rep. CD Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) heard of an incident in his district.

Davidsmeyer said a student threatened another child with gun violence on school grounds. The incident was reported to a teacher, but the teacher did not report it to any higher official.

This plan would require that once a staff member learns of a gun violence threat on school grounds, they must report it to the principal. Then, the principal must call the parents and ask if the student has easy access to a firearm.

"I think as a law abiding gun owner I look at this and say we have to do everything possible to keep gun violence from happening," Davidsmeyer said.

With the bill passing both chambers, the proposal now heads to the Governor's desk, where it could be signed into law.
