'They are leaving their legacy,' DPS students sign beam for new school

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Students at American Dreamer Magnet School celebrated their success Friday morning during a Breakfast of Champions.

Decatur Public Schools honored the students who improved their testing scores.

"It makes me feel proud of myself because you know I worked hard to get to where I am now, so I feel pretty happy," said Genesis Brandon, 6th grade.

However, it wasn't just breakfast. The students at American Dreamer Magnet School were able to sign an I-beam for the new Ellsworth Dansby Jr. Magnet School.

"They are leaving their legacy, so everyone where will get the opportunity to sign this beam and they will always know that they are apart of history," said Dr. Rochelle Clark, Superintendent.

Decatur Public Schools broke ground on the new school back in September 2023. The school is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
