(WAND) - If you're traveling over Spring Break, the TSA is warning people to be prepared for long wait times at airports.Â
"Spring Break is always a busy time for airports, but this year we are seeing additional pressure on security lines due to TSA staffing limitations," said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Travelers should expect slower lines at some airports. The best way to avoid missed flights is to arrive early, stay informed, and allow plenty of extra time."
According to the latest AAA Consumer Pulse survey, 31 percent of Illinoisans plan to travel for Spring Break this year.
Among those:
- 36 percent plan to visit a beach destination
- 25 percent plan to visit a theme park
- 24 percent to a city/major metro destination
AAA Tips for Air Travelers Facing Slower Security Lines
- Check TSA wait times before leaving home
- Use airport websites or the MyTSA app to get real‑time estimates.
- Arrive at least two to three hours early – even for domestic flights
- Some airports have already issued guidance encouraging travelers to arrive earlier than usual due to heavy volume and slower checkpoint processing.
- Book airport parking in advance
- Lots often fill quickly during Spring Break.
- Use your airline’s mobile app
- Enable notifications for gate changes, delays, and boarding alerts.
- Avoid checking bags when possible
- Carry‑on only travel shortens the time spent in crowded terminals.
- Keep carry‑on items organized
- Packing efficiently helps lines move faster.
- Consider travel insurance
- It can help offset the cost of delays, cancellations, or lost luggage.
