DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - For 22 years, Vinnie Barbee has been making thanksgiving dinner for dozens of people at Water Street Mission. The spread includes smoked turkey, sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, and lots of dessert. Barbee says its a simple way to make a big difference for people on the holidays.Â
"I'm just glad to be able to give back to my community and give back to them," said Barbee. "I call them my family. I've met a lot of people here."
Barbee doesn't do it alone. He has a group of volunteers helping serve the meals and make a difference for the community.Â
He says when people leave Water Street Mission with a smile, he knows that he served them good food and that they had a good holiday.Â
Now that the meal has been served, Barbee said it's time to focus his energy on his Christmas toy drive. You can drop off unwrapped, new toys to the Book Barn or the Glass House until December 15th.
