SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - While Springfield is home to many historic homes, there is one that sticks out from the traditional 19th century architecture.
The Dana Thomas house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, one of fewer than 20 buildings in Illinois that can claim that title. The house was built between 1902-1904, early on in Wright's career.Â
Every year between 20,000-25,000 people tour the Dana Thomas House, according to Justin Blandford, the Superintendent of Historic Sites in Springfield. Many come to see the original furniture and art glass collection, which were all designed by Wright himself.Â
The Dana Thomas House holds two extremely rare artifacts. One is a Wright Double Pedestal Lamp/ It is one of two known to exist.
Tje ptjer is a hand-hammered copper urn. There is one at the Dana Thomas House, one at the MET, and one at the Victoria and Albert Museum.Â
The house was purchased by the state of Illinois in 1981 and after a long restoration process, was opened to the public.Â
"There is over 100 pieces of Frank Lloyd Wright designed furniture in the house so you get to see a lot of the items that Susan Lawrence Dana had purchased and had designed by Frank Lloyd Wright so it really gives you the feel that she is still living in the home," said Blandford.
