A robot sprinter has broken another 100-meter record at China's World Humanoid Robot Games. The event ended its five-day run with more than 2,000 robots competing in various Olympics-style events. The winning robot finished the 100 meters in 8.64 seconds on Wednesday. That broke a record for the second consecutive day. Several robots crashed into a padded barrier after crossing the finish line. And sparks flew from some as staff rushed in with fire extinguishers. All three records were set by the same humanoid robot model, Tiangong Ultra, which is developed by X-Humanoid in Beijing.
Russian authorities have charged Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the popular messaging app Telegram, with aiding terrorism and placed him on an international wanted list. The Federal Security Service, or FSB, accused Telegram of failing to remove content allegedly used by Ukrainian intelligence and extremist groups. This comes as Russia intensifies efforts to control the internet, restricting Telegram and other platforms. Durov, a billionaire who lives in Dubai, could face life in prison if convicted. Since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russian authorities have been cracking down on internet freedom, banning platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
A school district in a rural corner of upstate New York is hitting pause on plans to deploy an AI-powered, humanoid robot in the classroom. Salamanca City Central School District had purchased the female-looking robot to enhance the education of high school students studying robotics and technology fields starting this fall. But state education officials and local residents raised concerns about how students' personal information would be used and what data privacy and security protections would be in place. Unionized teachers also criticized the robot maker’s ties to a company that produces hyper realistic sex robots.
