Bloomington, Ill. (WAND) -- Watch Me is an experience where all 92 players invited to the Shrine Game get to hang with patients of Shriners Hospital for Children.
During the two hours they learned the history and then had the chance to experience what the kids go through every day.
"They're being asked to do some of the things that they normally do like a relay race and showing their speed and skills, but doing it with one foot to show what it might be like to have something holding you back a little bit, but also to show that you can do and that our kids can do anything that they can do they just might do it a little bit differently," Tammy Robbins with Shriners Hospital said.Â
While they are competing against each other Saturday, on Friday everyone came together to try and beat the kids at their own games.
"We're having a lot of fun yesterday they were beating up on us and smacking us around and smoking the baseballs," Kameron Beckman from Springfield High School said. "And then today their just showing us they can do these things so much better than we can. It's just really eye opening."
"It's actually a lot harder than what you think especially with the foot difference and the different sizes with their legs being different," Cameron Schroth from Mt. Zion High School said. "And the game we're about to play with the oven mitts, trying to open a bag of chips it's not fun at all I mean it's hard to do everything but it's a blast with all the kids and everything."
Even with having fun today players say these kids made a lasting impression on them.
"I'm going to keep them in the back of my mind the whole time during the football game. Knowing that I'm blesses to have all functioning body parts and everything because for them they can't go play normal sports and everything I'm gonna keep them in my heart and play hard," Schroth said.
The 50th Shrine Game kicks off Saturday at 11 a.m. at Illinois Wesleyan University. Â
