CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - In the first two games of conference play for Illinois men's basketball, Keaton Wagler played a big role on the floor earning him Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
Through the Illini's win at Ohio State and last-second loss to #23 Nebraska at home, the freshman guard scored an average of 21 points, shooting 50% from the field, 54% from 3-point-range, and 92% from the free throw line.
Wagler's trip to Columbus was one of his best outings of the season, scoring a career and team high 23 points, adding 5 assists.
Despite the loss to the Cornhuskers, he recorded a double-double with 19 points and a career/game high of 10 assists in the 83-80 result.
It marks the third time in the first six weeks of the season that an Illini freshman has earned the honors, joining two selections of David Mirkovic.
The #18 Illini have a week off before their next game against Missouri in the annual Braggin' Rights game in St. Louis.
