Newton is the third-highest drafted defensive tackle in Illinois history, behind only Corey Liuget (No. 18 in 2011, San Diego) and Joe Rutgens (No. 3 in 1961, Washington).Â
Newton will join former teammate Quan Martin in the nation's capital, who was a second-round pick last year.
The Illini defensive tackle was one of the most dominant defensive players in program history. Newton earned consensus All-America honors while also being voted the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year.Â
Newton is the 52nd NFL Draft pick in Bret Bielema's 15 seasons as a head coach.
