Johnny Newton picking up National Awards

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) -- Illinois All-American defensive tackle Jer'Zhan (Johnny) Newton was named the Senior Bowl Defensive Player of the Week and the East-West Shrine Bowl Breakout Defensive Player of the Week. 

(WAND) — Johnny Newton is a Washington Commander.

The Illinois All-American defensive tackle was selected by Washington in the second round (No. 36 overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Newton is the third-highest drafted defensive tackle in Illinois history, behind only Corey Liuget (No. 18 in 2011, San Diego) and Joe Rutgens (No. 3 in 1961, Washington). 

Newton will join former teammate Quan Martin in the nation's capital, who was a second-round pick last year.

The Illini defensive tackle was one of the most dominant defensive players in program history. Newton earned consensus All-America honors while also being voted the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year. 

Newton is the 52nd NFL Draft pick in Bret Bielema's 15 seasons as a head coach.
