MACON, Ill. (WAND) - A beloved figure, mentor, and friend to the Macon community, Meridian softball coach Greg Streeval will retire at the end of the 2026 season.
Following Meridian's 14-1 win over CIC foe Tuscola on Friday, the Hawks took time to salute their coach who has paved the way for the development of numerous players who have worn the black and green uniform.
Streeval has been a part of the program for 28 seasons, leading the high school program to 12 regional titles, along with three consecutive state appearances with the middle school team.
Following the celebration, the head coach returned his gratitude to the players, past and present, who helped make his experience leading the team so memorable.
"What you just saw is just a really good indication, I mean, there's a tremendous amount of talent out on the field of former players today," Streeval said. "It's wonderful always to see them. They've helped me with my coaching. They've just been such a big, big part of it."
To celebrate his career, the Meridian athletics department is gifting the original home plate from the Hawks field to Streeval. Included on the plate are signatures from players and fellow Macon community members who shared their appreciation for all he has contributed to the team over nearly three decades.
"We try and make it fun, but we also try and keep things moving," Streeval adds. "We don't give them any down down time."
Following his time coaching, Streeval will spend more time running an antique shop in Booty. He also hopes to begin mentoring his 4-year-old granddaughter, helping her to take the next steps toward softball stardome.
