DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - January's Full Moon is known as the Wolf Moon.  The name is thought to have been brought over to North America by European settlers. Other names for this month's full moon include Stay Home Moon, Quiet Moon, Severe Moon, Center Moon and last, but not least, Supermoon.

Yes, the last in-a-series of supermoons takes place this weekend.  The full supermoon was technically this morning, but will continue to illuminate the night sky this weekend.   This supermoon won't set until 8:35 Sunday morning.   A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee. During every 27-day orbit around Earth, the Moon reaches both its perigee, about 226,000 miles from Earth, and its farthest point, or apogee, about 251,000 miles from Earth.

There will be a patch of clouds for a few hours tonight that will shroud the moon for a bit, but clear skies are forecast to return before daybreak.   The next supermoon won't occur until November.

Enjoy.
