DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - As for summer sky gazing, some would say there is no better show than the Perseid meteor shower.  The annual event is on-going, but tonight just so happens to be the peak performance. Â
A new moon cycle adds to the darkness effect. The only wrench in the works is cloud cover.  While overcast conditions are not expected throughout the night, it will be at least partly cloudy.  If you are taking your chances tonight, the peak of 50-100 meteors per hour is after midnight. The radiant point is the northeast sky, although you really can see them in any part the sky. Between 2am and 5am, the radiant point shifts to its highest point in the sky for optimum viewing (minus any cloud cover, of course). Â
If clouds and a thunderstorm deter you from viewing Persied's best tonight, the meteor shower continues until August 24th. Â
