DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) -Â When you look at a weather map and see a big blue "H", you can generally expect clear skies and warmer temperatures. But why exactly does high pressure bring such warm weather? It all comes down to the behavior of sinking air.
In a high-pressure system, air from high up in the atmosphere slowly sinks toward the surface. This downward motion is called subsidence. As this air sinks, two key meteorological processes occur:
- Compressional Warming: As the air descends, it moves into areas of higher atmospheric pressure closer to the Earth's surface. This compresses the air, and when you compress a gas, its temperature rises. This is known as adiabatic warming.
- Cloud Suppression: Sinking air warms and dries out. Since warm air can hold more water vapor than cool air, any existing moisture evaporates, preventing clouds from forming.
Without cloud cover, there is nothing to block incoming solar radiation. The sun's rays beat down directly on the ground, rapidly heating the surface, which in turn heats the air directly above it.
So the next time a high-pressure dome settles over your region, remember: it's that sinking air acting like a giant atmospheric blanket, warming up as it squeezes downward and clearing the way for plenty of sunshine.Â
