DECATUR, IL. (WAND) - A blocking pattern is setting up this week, and it will bring us another streak of heat, humidity, and dry conditions.Â
We normally talk about omega blocks when we refer to setups that bring consecutive days of sunshine and heat, but this week, it’s a rex block. The main difference is the closed low that moves south of the upper-level ridge, rather than a ridge squeezed between two lows. This setup is slightly less persistent, but it can still bring excessive heat and dry conditions for areas centered under the ridge.Â
However, in this case, this ridge will be centered primarily over the northern Great Plains, meaning the hottest temperatures will remain out of our area. It will still be hot and sunny this week, but we’ll likely stay out of any heat alert criteria. By the second half of the week, our next wave out of Canada will allow the ridge to gradually break down. Raindrops will likely return by the weekend.Â
