DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — As summer heats up and children spend more time outdoors, Ameren encourages families to have an important safety talk with their kids about the potential dangers of electricity.
"More than ever, young people are operating devices and technologies—like drones—that can come into contact with overhead electrical equipment," said Brian Brackney, director of safety for Ameren. "We are encouraging parents to talk to kids about the dangers of overhead power lines and surrounding electrical equipment and remind them to stay away."
Ameren is reminding families to be cautious when flying drones, kites, or remote-controlled planes. These activities should only take place in open fields or parks, and far away from power lines. If a kite or device becomes stuck near electrical equipment, children should not attempt to retrieve it. Instead, Ameren urges families to call the power company.
The company also warns against climbing utility poles, towers, or trees near power lines.
Ameren also reminds families about being safe around downed power lines. Any fallen or hanging wires should be considered energized and dangerous. Children should tell an adult immediately if they encounter a downed line. Parents should report downed lines to Ameren Illinois.
In terms of water safety, Ameren urges homeowners to install ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) on outdoor outlets. These devices cut off electricity quickly if a problem is detected.
Children should never touch electrical appliances while in a pool or hot tub, and parents should ensure all devices are kept at least 10 feet away from any water source. Ameren also stresses that children should never swim during a thunderstorm or when lightning is nearby.
As families build swing sets or install new outdoor play areas this summer, Ameren asks them to keep power lines in mind. Playgrounds and pools should not be built underneath or close to overhead wires. Before digging, always call 811 to have underground utility lines marked.
