Decatur Public Transit hybrid bus

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The City of Decatur is sharing a picture of Decatur Public Transit's new hybrid buses.

The Gillig Hybrid E-gen Flexes are electric hybrids that do not require charging.

Decatur Public Transit received the first two of five being built, which were completely paid for using IDOT Rebuild Illinois grant funds.

The hybrids can operate fully electric for up to 200 miles per day. DPT said it will geofence the areas it will operate electric, ideally in higher-populated areas such as downtown.

The buses will automatically convert to 100% electric when it crosses the threshold into a geofenced area and then back to hybrid when it leaves.

This is part of the City's efforts to transition to a Zero Emissions Fleet by 2040.
The plan is to have the first one in service within the next month.
