DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The shelves at Decatur Catholic Charities never stay full for long. As the need for food continues to climb, the annual WSOY Community Food Drive has become more than just a boost — for many families, it’s a lifeline.
“It means a lot to me because right now, it’s hard for a lot of people to eat and survive,” one woman shared, echoing the experiences of thousands in the community.
One of the benefactors of the drive is Decatur Catholic Charities.
Amanda Honn, Area Director, says demand has surged. “We’re seeing between 1,000 to 1,400 individuals per month,” she explained. The food pantry serves anyone in need — whether they’re facing a long-term crisis or just hitting a rough patch.
Shelves fill and empty quickly, with staples like milk, bread, cheese, and protein products among the most in demand. For families struggling to balance groceries with bills, gas, or medicine, the assistance can be the difference between going without or having enough to eat.
“I don’t even know that I can express in words how amazing it is to have the WSOY food drive,” Honn said. “Every agency in food security right now is making plans to ensure we can continue to give to those that need our services.”
From produce, canned products, and dairy, the donations represent more than meals — they remind families that their community hasn’t forgotten about them.
“It helps out a lot,” one woman said. “It makes ends meet.”
The WSOY Food Drive is set to keep shelves stocked and stomachs full, offering hope as the community heads into the colder months when the need is often greatest.
The WSOY Community Food Drive takes place Friday, Oct. 3, at the Airport Plaza Kroger in Decatur. Non-perishable items and monetary donations will be accepted all day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
