SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Thousands of people filled the streets outside the statehouse in Springfield during the pro-life march, united in one message: supporting life at all stages.Â
"I'm here today to support life, to support every baby in the womb and every person who ever has thought about taking their own life. Who's ever wanted assisted suicide," said one participant, Morgan Tintori. Â
Demonstrators said this march is not just about abortion; they are concerned about a new law, legalizing medical aid in dying. Governor JB Pritzker signed medically assisted suicide into law for terminally ill patients, which will take effect in September 2026. Â
"It feels great just to be with people who I know believe the same as me. And who are willing to stand up for what they believe in a peaceful, nice way," said Kaitlynn Leonard. Â
The march also included a rally, calling for action from legislators. Many advocates are concerned about abortion facilities, gender affirming care and other acts they view as life-altering.Â
"Our request to the governor is to just ask himself this question of whether he's concerned for the vulnerable women in our state who are being harmed because of these unregulated facilities," said Mary Kate Zander, president of Illinois Right to Life. Â
Supporters also spoke with their legislators to ensure their voices were heard.
"We have reason to believe that the governor is considering introducing a constitutional amendment that would enshrine both abortion and gender affirming care, as they call it, into the state constitution. And this is a major of major concern to us," Zander said.Â
Many participants said this march shows how engaged and passionate people are about life.Â
