DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Decatur Fire Department members who received promotions between the years of 2013 and 2025 were honored at a pinning ceremony Saturday morning.

Decatur Mayor Julie Moore-Wolfe said the ceremony was a time to acknowledge the important work DFD does in the community.

"Our firefighters are our heroes. Now, if you ask them, they would tell you they are just doing their job on any given shift, but they are the ones who rush in when others rush out," Moore-Wolfe said.

DFD Fire Chief Neil Elder said the ceremony was a long time coming, and it was something for all to celebrate.

"You pick someone to pin you that you trust, that you want to share that moment with, and that you've really earned that badge for," Elder said.

Chief Elder said the department is making a commitment to hold more consistent pinning ceremonies, with one tentatively planned for this spring.
