SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Grab the tackle box and take dad out fishing during Illinois Free Fishing Days.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, from June 14 through the 17, anglers can fish without purchasing a fishing license, salmon stamp or inland trout stamp.

Information about fishing spots, regulations, and angling basics can be found at IFishIllinois.org.

The free event takes place during the months-long virtual 2024 Midwest Walleye Challenge. The challenge uses the mobile app MyCatch to record the length of each fish caught. Anglers take a picture of the fish on a measuring device using the app, and once the fish is reviewed by the catch team and meets the rules, it appears on a live leaderboard where anglers can see who is in the lead.

Anglers can go online to view the rules and sign up to participate.

When Free Fishing Days are not in effect, the state requires anyone over 16 to have a fishing license. Licenses can be purchased for $15 and are available at vendors through the state or the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ website.
