CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The Christie Clinic Illinois Race Weekend is around the corner, and organizers are doing their best to exemplify this year's theme: "Leave Your Legacy."
The race will be held April 23 to 25 on the streets of Champaign, Urbana and Savoy.Â
Participants at the 17th annual race will partake in either a marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 5K, mile, youth run, or eight multi-event challenges.Â
Over the years, the race weekend has been able to donate close to $2 million to charities in the community and has generated an estimated $5 million in economic impact annually.Â
Director Jan Seeley said that this weekend is about more than the races.Â
"It's not just the running, it's not just the almost $2 million that we've donated, but it's all these other ways that we leave a legacy here in Champaign-Urbana," Seeley said.Â
As a part of their legacy, they will also host a free hands-only CPR training program for 200 people. The program was created after last year's Race Weekend when 45-year-old Christie surgeon Rafael Ruggieri suffered cardiac arrest while running in the Christie Clinic Illinois Half Marathon. Ruggieri's son, who was running with him, performed CPR and helped save his life.Â
They also provide free running shoes and socks to kids running in the 5K or Busey Bank Youth Run through their non-profit organization, "Kicks for CU Kids."
