DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Nonprofits across the country generally see an increase in funding around the holiday season, as people give as part of their traditions. But as the second month of the year comes to a close, that funding is starting to run out.

"The need continues, especially from a monetary perspective and being able to support the ongoing operation so that we can continue to do what we do," said Tanya Melendez, executive director of the Good Samaritan Inn. "We are very dependent, now more than ever, on the support of the community for continued operations and costs and food costs, especially with the uncertainty of federal funding."

The Good Samaritan Inn provides free meals to the Macon County community every day of the year. So far in 2024, they've served an average of 216 meals a day. Last year, that number was 200, and in 2023, it was 156.

The Salvation Army of Decatur & Macon County's Food Pantry is also seeing an increase in need. In 2023, they had 800 people a month using pantry services. In 2024, that number jumped to over 1,100.

"When we say the need continues to increase, the numbers are showing just that," said Kyle Karsten, director of development. "I think with more families needing their assistance. More families, now, even if you don't have to come to a food pantry, are seeing food costs continue to go up. It's tough."

Both the Salvation Army and Good Samaritan Inn said the WSOY Community Food Drive was critical in helping them stock their shelves. But they need continued community support to keep their doors open.

Melendez says each time a volunteer spends time helping, they are saying the organization money. Even if they don't give financially, they are making a difference.

"In 2024, we had over a thousand unique volunteers who came to help, and they covered over 9,200 volunteer hours," said Melendez. "That is money that we don't need to pay out, because people are just doing this because they want to, and so we would not be able to operate without their generous support."

Kirsten said one of the best ways the community can help The Salvation Army is by holding drives for food or hygiene items. He said if 3-4 organizations, whether its churches, schools, or businesses did this, it would make a huge difference.

Both Good Samaritan Inn and The Salvation Army said to contact them if you would like to help. You can contact the Good Samaritan Inn at (217) 429-1455. You can call The Salvation Army at (217) 428-4672.
