DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – The familiar sound of ringing bells and the sight of red kettles are back as the Salvation Army kicks off its annual Christmas campaign.

This year, leaders said the need is greater than ever.

Major Randall Summit at the Macon County Salvation Army said this marks his third Christmas season in Decatur, and while the community has always rallied around its neighbors, the growing demand for help has been clear.

“It’s an exciting time,” Summit said. “We’ve seen our programs grow, and with that comes more need. Our food pantry has more than doubled. We’re now seeing over 100 families every time we open our doors.”

The Salvation Army’s food pantry operates every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., and on the third Saturday morning of each month. Summit told WAND News the hours are designed to help working families access food assistance.

“Last night alone, we served 128 families — not individuals, families,” he said. “That’s roughly 300 to 400 people.”

Summit explained that donations raised during the Christmas Campaign are critical to keeping services going into the new year. Funds from past community drives have helped bridge budget gaps, but this season’s contributions will greatly impact the programs TSA offers.

“The need is huge, and these donations are vital.”

In addition to monetary donations, the Salvation Army has also called for volunteer bell ringers.

“Anyone can ring a bell,” Summit said. “It could be a Boy Scout with his parents, a senior in a wheelchair, someone from MRI — literally anybody. We just ask for a minimum two-hour shift, but we’ll work with whatever people can give.”

Kettles will begin appearing at Farm & Fleet, Rural King, and Hobby Lobby this Friday, followed by Walmart and Sam’s Club the next week. By Black Friday, bell ringers will be stationed at stores across the area, including Kroger locations.

“It takes a village,” Summit said. “We’re thankful to all of our business partners who let us stand outside their doors, and we just wish everyone a Merry Christmas.”
