DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — In September, the University of Illinois Extension office will teach you about the pawpaw tree and even let you sample its banana-like fruit.

On September 17th, at 2 p.m., participants will learn about the native tropical fruit for one hour at the Allerton Public Library. They will learn the history of the pawpaw tree, how to grow the fruit at home, and even eat some pawpaw bread.

The fruit tree is native to the state, and its fruits are the largest in North America. The fruit is about 3 to 6 inches long.

Additionally, an educator says it has an interesting flavor combination. “The pawpaw is an amazing native fruit to Illinois that tastes like a combination of a banana, mango, and papaya,” says Extension Educator Doug Gucker. They are also resistant to most insects and diseases.”

Allerton Public Library is located at 4000 Green Apple Ln., in Monticello.
