SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Springfield Police Department hosted a BBQ this weekend with the goal of strengthening the connection between law enforcement and the local community.Â
It was called the "Bridging the Gap BBQ."Â
It was hosted by the Springfield Police Department and The Outlet mentoring group. Families got to take part in games, check out first responders' vehicles, and enjoy some food.Â
Springfield Police Chief Ken Scarlette said, "It brings a smile to my face, especially with the younger generation can build that relationship with officers. Often times there is more to us than just a badge and a uniform, and I think that is extremely important to build that connection so that those young individuals can trust us when they need law enforcement. Ultimately, that is what we are here for is to serve our community."
