(WAND) - Almost $6 million in federal funding has been cut by the Trump administration, according to the Illinois Department of Human Services.
IDHS said the cuts will take place effective immediately.
Over 2,000 grants totaling over $2 billion in funding nationwide were canceled on Tuesday.
Affected grants will include Strategic Prevention Framework – Partnerships for Success for States (SPF-PFSS), Illinois Prevent Prescription Drug/Opioid Overdose-Related Deaths (IPDO), Garret Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention and Intervention Grant, Project AWARE and REACH Out.
Governor JB Pritzker said cutting such programs is "nothing short of abject cruelty."
"If Trump truly wanted to reduce crime and make our cities safer, he wouldn’t rip resources away from people struggling. Illinois will use every resource at its disposal to fight for the support our people deserve," Pritzker said in an IDHS press release.
It remains unclear how local programs in Central Illinois will be impacted.
