DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - For seven years, The Art Farm has been a spot in Downtown Decatur for local artists to sell and display their art. It was a passion project for owner, Peggy Ankrom-Baity who wanted a local haven for artists.
"I wanted to bring something here that we didn't have that I've experienced elsewhere," said Ankrom-Baity. "It was magical to me and I just wanted to be the catalyst to make it all easier for local art to get recognized."
Over 110 local artists have sold their work at The Art Farm and found community with each other. Ankrom-Baity says running the business has been difficult, but worthwhile to see artists gain confidence in their work.
"That's my favorite part is the stories of how many artists fought self-doubt because, I mean, if you're an artist in any capacity, self-doubt is always sitting right here," said Ankrom-Baity. "Getting them over that hump, giving people a platform, being able to encourage people, that's just in my nature."
Ankrom-Baity says current economic conditions and the start of a new chapter in her life are the reason for the closure. While she is sad to close her doors, she hopes she's made a difference for local artists.
"I think I've been able to show the community that thinking outside of the box and taking a risk and flying by the seat of your pants is how you accomplish things," said Ankrom-Baity. " I would like to think I cracked open a nice wide path for a channel of all new thinking as far as the art community in Decatur."
The final day of the Art Farm is Saturday, May 31st. There will be an ArtFarm Farewell Festival on Saturday, June 28th. It will be a street festival taking place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
