URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - The Urbana Police Department's partnership with Rosecrance was in full effect starting Monday.
Â
The crisis co-response team aims to provide a more active approach to emergency calls and mental health services.Â
Â
"Being able to be there for someone on their toughest day and getting them connected to resources. It's a really rewarding part of the job," said Keirin Cross, a mental health clinician.
Â
Cross earned her master's degree in social work and knew that she wanted to do more crisis work. In her opinion, a crisis is something different every day, and she is passionate about serving the community in a variety of ways.
Â
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, law enforcement officers are often the first responders to mental health crises, and people who experience a mental health crisis are often more likely to encounter a law enforcement officer than a mental health professional.Â
Â
Cross hopes that in the future the program will reduce the stigma on mental health services. For mental health services in this program, you can visit the Rosencrance Behavioral Health website.
