Police say five people are dead after a “targeted mass shooting” against a family in southwestern Illinois. Two more people were wounded, and two teenagers are in custody. The shootings occurred primarily Sunday at three locations in East St. Louis, including a park. East St. Louis is across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. Homicides there have dropped significantly since 2020. The Illinois State Police Director says progress reducing violent crime in East St. Louis “will not be lost” despite the tragedy.
