Giant sinkhole in southern Illinois causes indefinite road closure

A sinkhole near Illinois Route 185 between Hillsboro and Coffeen in April 2024.

HILLSBORO, Ill. (WAND) — The Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency posted on its Facebook page on Wednesday that officials with the Deer Run Mine said the ground surface has begun to collapse. In other words, a sinkhole near Illinois Route 185 is causing issues once again.

Drivers are urged to travel with caution in the area, reducing their speed and paying attention to posted road signs.

MCEMA said that while the mine authorities have said that land is sinking, Illinois Route 185 will remain open.

IDOT ended up closing the road in April of this year due to the sinkhole growing.
