Decatur Police shared an update on the investigation. 

Police said, the 16-year-old victim and Jayden M. Michniewicz were friends. 

Through initial interviews, the 16-year-old victim was visiting Michniewicz’s residence when a firearm was being handled. 

During the transfer of the firearm, it discharged striking the victim. 

The Decatur Police Department continues to thoroughly investigate this tragic incident to include following up on leads as to how this firearm was obtained.

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — One teen is dead after a shooting early Saturday morning. 

Decatur Police say, they were called to the 600 block of W. William St. around 2:15 a.m. They found a 16 year old with a gunshot wound. They were taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital where they died. 

After further investigation, police found a loaded firearm at the residence. 

18 year old Jayden Michniewicz was arrested on probable cause for involuntary manslaughter. He was booked in the Macon County Jail. 

Police are reminding everyone about the importance of safe gun ownership and have the proper safety and storage equipment when owning firearms. 

Police also shared this statement, "The Decatur Police Department would like to give our condolences to the 16-oid juvenile's family and friends in this incident."
