EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) - The quick action of firefighters who were participating in training let them extinguish a house fire that started not far from where they were working.
On March 30 just before 8 p.m., the Effingham Fire Department realized a porch had caught fire at a home in the 400 block of W. Edgar Ave. following department training activities near the fire station.
Firefighters quickly ran over with fire extinguishers and got the fire out just one minute after it was discovered.
The fire was contained to the porch and area underneath it, preventing it from spreading to the main house.
The home was occupied at the time by a person with limited mobility.
The fire was accidental and was believed to have been caused by improperly discarded smoking materials, EFD said.
